Rosemary Milton Miano

Mrs. Miano began her legal career in 1979 as an associate in the patent firm of Woodcock Washburn Kurtz Mackiewicz & Norris in Philadelphia where she was responsible for preparing and prosecuting patents in the chemical and mechanical arts and litigation work in the area of medical devices and mechanical arts. In 1984 she joined ICI Pharmaceuticals (now Astra-Zeneca) as their sole U.S. pharmaceutical patent attorney and also wrote the patent application for their SEROQUEL® product. In 1988 she joined Hoechst-Celanese Corp. and worked in two of their divisions, Specialty Chemicals (including the SUNETTE® sweetener business) and also the Engineering Plastics group. In 1996 she joined Colgate-Palmolive Co. with responsibility for consumer products technology and obtained patents on a number of commercially important products. In 2004 she joined Pfizer in their consumer healthcare group which included responsibility for the Capsugel line of capsules and tobacco dependency products. In 2007 she joined Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. with responsibility for pharmaceutical work in selected areas of cardiovascular and metabolic drugs.
Mrs. Miano has extensive experience in a wide variety of patent activities. She has worked in the fields of chemistry, pharmaceuticals, consumer products and healthcare, mechanical arts, drug capsule technologies and engineering plastics. She has prepared and prosecuted applications; created patent strategies in crowded and competitive fields; prepared freedom to operate opinions, licensing and joint development agreements (including work with universities); participated in due diligence activities; led in-house efforts in an alternative dispute proceeding; participated in several major litigations; and conducted patent seminars and workshops for corporate personnel.
Mrs. Miano’s practice encompasses the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications, creation of patent strategies and client counseling in the chemical, pharmaceutical and medical device areas. She currently focuses her work on medical devices and pharmaceuticals with an emphasis on the development of patent portfolios in these highly competitive areas. Additionally she provides counseling on U.S. and foreign patent practice with a view toward proactive and litigation-based patent prosecution. She has experience in all aspects of patent law including patentability assessment, preparation and prosecution of patent applications, joint development agreements, freedom to operate assessments and opinions, creation of patent strategies, life cycle management, patent portfolio management, due diligence, alternate dispute proceedings and litigation. She is an expert in the education and training of non-legal personnel as well as patent agents. She joined Mayer & Williams PC as Of Counsel in 2009. She believes in building solid relationships with clients to create patent assets of commercial value that will withstand the challenge of litigation.
